The Various Diners of Whatcom County 24: Al's Downtown Diner

2012 Main Street, Ferndale, WA

Where we headed today, Mr. Tummy?  Well, it's lovely Ferndale and the small, unassuming Al's Diner.

Cozy but also surprisingly on the new side in terms of decor, the place was packed -- the best sign there is for a quality restaurant.

Now, for a little bit of controversy, Al's online menu listed Eggs Benedict, but when I arrived they were off the board (literally, they had been erased from the chalkboard).  But hey, we roll with everything.  I got an enormous order of gravy and biscuits and dug in.

Vibe:  Friendly, cozy, busy, but weirdly quiet.

Song heard: No music!  Sorry, but that's weird.

Coffee:  Tony's Coffee, so very local and good.

Did the yolk pop like it should?:  Yes, but damn this was a load of food.  I managed to get to three of the biscuits and gave up.  You will be full after leaving here!

Can I sit and read a while?:  Well, it was really busy and the poor waitress kept dashing back and forth between a sign in the window that read "Help Wanted."  So today no, but if you were there at a quieter time sure, it's nice enough.

Price:  $18.23.  Very nice value for so much food that easily could serve two.

There isn't one thing Al's does that will blow you away, but it all adds up -- quality food and friendly service.  Maybe that's Ferndale in a nutshell -- quiet, but pleasant.  Worth the trip!

Overall:

3.5 / 5 Nighthawks
